Founded and headed by acclaimed film-maker John McKay, Compact is about putting ideas together with talent, and helping talent make their crazy ideas a practical and entertaining reality. UK-based with a global outlook, we work across film, tv and social media.
Scottish, writer, director and recently producer – John’s movies include Crush with Andie Macdowell and Imelda Staunton, Piccadilly Jim with Sam Rockwell and Frances O’ Connor, and Not Another Happy Ending with Karen Gillan and Stanley Weber; tv includes lead direction on Ordinary Lies, Life On Mars, Robin Hood, The Whistleblowers and The Canterbury Tales (where he gave Billy Piper her first starring role), as well as single dramas A Waste of Shame with Rupert Graves and Tom Sturridge (RTS nomination, Best Single Drama), Reichenbach Falls, and his film on the love affair between David Bailey and Jean Shrimpton We’ll Take Manhattan – which he wrote, directed and exec produced – winning the Prix Europa for Best Drama.
Current work includes screenplays BURNS for Gerrard Butler and Lionsgate, ELIZABETH OF GLAMIS for BBC One and THE WALLACE for STV; while at COMPACT developing CHOSEN – an icy Baltic tv thriller with screenwriter James Mavor; THE LADYSHIP – a feature adaptation of Rachel Johnson’s delightful comic memoir of her year as the editor of the world’s oldest ladies magazine; and 9 DEATHS a shocking family crime saga, with David Harrower, acclaimed writer of Una.
This year Compact wrapped production on BFI / SFTN New Talent Short 1745 – written by Morayo Akande and directed by Gordon Napier – awarded a Jury Special Mention at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
